If you suffer from chronic sinusitis or other sinus problems, balloon sinuplasty may offer a noninvasive solution. Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure that directly addresses sinus inflammation without the need for incisions. This fast, and effective procedure can provide substantial relief and a quick recovery. As a pioneer in balloon sinuplasty, Dr. Michael S. Cohen in Long Island, NY, can help you experience long-lasting benefits through this treatment.
Do I Need a Balloon Sinuplasty?
Chronic sinusitis condition is characterized by persistent inflammation of the sinus lining. If inflammation is severe, the sinus opening can become blocked, preventing mucus from draining normally. This mucus buildup can lead to further swelling, infection, and other painful symptoms.
Sinusitis can be caused by allergies, a deviated septum, nasal polyps, cystic fibrosis, gastroesophageal reflux, environmental pollutants, or other conditions. To be classified as chronic, your sinusitis must persist for 12 weeks or longer.
Symptoms of chronic sinusitis include:
- Nasal stuffiness
- Postnasal drip
- The sensation of fullness or pain in the sinuses
- Swelling or tenderness around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead
- Sinus pressure or congestion
- Difficulty breathing through your nose
- Sinus headache
- Tooth pain
- Bad breath
- Persistent feelings of discomfort or illness
If you experience any of these symptoms, Dr. Cohen can discuss possible solutions with you to determine a treatment plan. He will conduct a close analysis of your physical exam and symptoms to determine if balloon sinuplasty or another solution is the best way to help you achieve relief.

What to Expect
Balloon sinuplasty does not require any invasive surgical procedures. The procedure uses a small, flexible balloon to open sinus passageways blocked by inflammation, and facilitates drainage of any mucus buildup. Instead of removing or interfering with inflamed sinus tissue, the doctor can simply push it out of the way, helping your sinuses to clear quickly.
During the Procedure
The procedure itself is very simple. First, Dr. Cohen takes time to thoroughly numb the nose and sinus areas. He then gently inserts a deflated balloon catheter into the inflamed sinus. Once the instrument is in place, he will inflate the balloon to progressively expand the sinus drainage passageway. Once the passageway has been opened, Dr. Cohen may spray saline into the inflamed sinus to flush out mucus and other buildup. Finally, the doctor will deflate and remove the system, leaving your sinuses open and clear.
After the Procedure
Recovery time can vary, but most patients who undergo balloon sinuplasty can return to their normal activities and work within two days. After receiving this procedure, nearly all of our patients have reported a significantly improved quality of life and long-lasting relief from sinus issues.
